Incidents

We are tasked by the emergency services, including HM Coastguaard, Fire & Rescue, Police and the Ambulance Services. Our teams are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Below are the callouts that we have attended.

  • South Cerney 16-05-20 (#63)

We were called out shortly before midnight on Fri 15 May, to support Gloucestershire Police with a missing person search.
Land search teams from SARA Tewkesbury and Beachley and a water rescue team from SARA Sharpness were deployed to the Cotswold Water Park near South Cerney.
Sadly the team subsequently discovered the body of a man, which was carefully recovered and handed over to the Police in the small hours of the morning.
Our thoughts are with all of his family and friends at this tragic time.

  • Newport 13-05-20

We were tasked at 0025 to assist Chepstow Coastguard, South Wales Fire and Gwent Police with reports of a person threatening to enter the water in Newport City Centre.
Lifeboat 14 ‘Maureen Easton’ was launched but we were pleased to be stood down as the person was safe and in an ambulance.
Following recovery the lifeboat was washed and refuelled before the crew headed back home for bed (or in some cases continued their night shift!)

  • Beachley Point 07-05-20

SARA Lifeboat 1 was launched in the early evening, as an Immediate callout to reports of a person cut off by the tide. On investigation this was a fisherman, intentionally on Chapel Rock and safe & sound.
A false alarm with good intentions; many thanks to those who responded so rapidly.

  • Upper Rissington 03-05-20 (#60)

The SARA Land Search Teams were called out around 3pm, to support Gloucestershire Constabulary with a missing person search in the Upper Rissington area of Gloucestershire.
Teams from the SARA Stations at Tewkesbury, Beachley and Wyre Forest, and members of Gloucestershire Cave Rescue Group, were all deployed. Just after initial resources reached the RV, police had a positive sighting and reported that the missing person was safe and well, so the volunteers were stood down.
This was our 60th callout so far this year, and the 10th since the official lockdown started on 23 March.

  • Beachley (Pillhouse Rocks) 02-05-20

SARA Lifeboat 3 ‘Swift and Bold’ was launched mid-morning, to reports of a dog in difficulties in the River Severn near Pill House Rocks, close to Tidenham.
Once on scene it was clear that the dog and its owner were safe, although the dog (‘Twinkle’) was injured and was taken to the vets. The crew searched the area in case there were any further issues but they found nothing and then stood down and recovered the lifeboat back at Beachley, close to the bottom of tide.
It later transpired that Twinkle lived close by, and had injuries consistent with being attacked by a larger animal. Twinkle has been understandably reluctant to provide any further information but has recovered well.

  • Soudley 24-04-20 (#58)

We were called out to support Gloucestershire Constabulary with a missing person search in the Soudley area of the Forest of Dean, with an RV at the Dean Heritage Centre at 11am. Land Search Teams from SARA Beachley and Tewkesbury Stations and an SRT Team from SARA Sharpness were joined by members of Gloucestershire Cave Rescue Group, and The Salvation Army Team from Coleford provided very welcome refreshments.
After several hours of searching, some of which was in pretty complex woodland, the missing lady was located. She assessed and attended to by several of our Casualty Carers and then carried out to an NHS Ambulance which arrived very quickly.
We wish her a speedy recovery.
